Unlike some other treatments, cognitive behavioral therapy deals with your current problems, rather than focusing on issues from your past. It looks for practical ways to improve your state of mind on a daily basis. A certain amount of information about one's history is needed, but the focus is primarily on moving forward in time to develop more effective ways of coping with life.

Imagine, for example, that at night you are lying in your bed and you hear a loud noise. You may be thinking ' oh dear, a burglar ', you panic and call the police. You can also think ' that cat, the cat has certainly broken something ‘, you become irritated, go downstairs and clean up the mess. This is an example of how one situation (you are lying in your bed and hear a loud noise) can be explained by the way you interpret the situation. With psychological symptoms, it works more or less the same. People have learned to think in a certain way about a situation, causing them to experience negative feelings and thereby exhibit certain behaviors that they do not want. In cognitive behavioral therapy the therapist asks you to take a better look at your mindset or thought patterns. It is your own interpretation of the situation that creates non-helping feelings. By working with journal forms you will get more insight into your thoughts and you are better able to reduce your negative feelings and adjust your behavior in desired behavior. So the goal of cognitive behavioral therapy is to teach you to develop helping thought patterns. If people change their way of thinking, this also changes how they are feeling.
Behavioral therapy focuses on changing your behavior. How you act determines to a large extent how you are feeling. Behavioral therapy is focused on helping you understand how changing your behavior can lead to changes in how you are feeling. The goal of behavior therapy is usually focused on increasing the person’s engagement in positive or socially reinforcing activities. Behavioral therapy is a structured approach that carefully measures what the person is doing and then seeks to increase chances for positive experience. In behavioral therapy, for example, you will learn to stay relaxed in situations that previously caused irrational fear. In this way, psychological symptoms are reduced.
According to official guidelines CBT is the first choice psychological treatment for anxiety symptoms and anxiety disorders (including social anxiety disorder, panic attacks, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, anxiety and binding separation anxiety), depression and mood swings, job-related complaints such as overstrain, excessive worry, fatigue and burnout symptoms.
Typical for the cognitive behavioral therapist or psychologist, is that you are encouraged to discuss your problems in an open manner. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is about your current problems and how you can try to avoid it in the future. Regularly there are certain concrete goals.
The duration of a treatment depends on the complaint and the form of therapy. On average a complete treatment takes between ten and twenty sessions of 45 minutes.
